The Processor

Make: Intel Vs AMD

Intel and AMD are the main choices. AMD processors are cheaper and thus slower than Intel's latest processors.

AMD have two types on the market at present, the Athlon and Duron, Intel's latest processor is the Pentium© 4 HT .

So how can we tell which one is best?

Processor Speed

Note the speed is not quoted in the previous speciation list.

The Speed of teh processor is the main factor of any computer and the Pentium© 4 is available in faster speeds than the AMD processors. Speed is measured in Giga Hertz , (GHz).

Beware when comparing an AMD system with a Pentium system. A typical AMD system i.e. the AMD Athlon XP 2200 is not running at the same speed as an Intel.
Pentium © 4 2.2Ghz.
Basically their numbering system doses not directly represent the speed as with Intel.

The speed of the processor will have the biggest influence of the overall price of the computer. You should chose the fastest you can afford.

FSB

Another important processor feature and price determination is its FSB speed. The fastest available at present is 800Mhz ; other typical values are 400 and 266. Beware that shop systems don't usually publicize the FSB speed; slower and older FSB speed processors are worth considerably less than the newer faster speeds. Ensure you check this to evaluate a system price effectively.
